  • My Red Carpet Quest: A two -year search for Steve

My Red Carpet Quest: A two -year search for Steve

Times Insider explains who we are and what we do and provides insights behind the scenes into how our journalism comes together.

Steve Olive was my white whale.

I tried to write a profile from Mr. for two years. Olive, the co-founder of Event Carpet Pros, the company based in California that is responsible for customizing the colorful, although not always red, carpets for thousands of film premières, The Golden Globes, The Grammy Awards, The Super Bowl and, since 1997, the Academy Awards.

I learned about Mr Olive in 2023, while reporting an article about why the Oscars organizers rolled out a champagne-colored carpet that year. My editor, Katie van Syckle, and I had found the website of the carpet products event and we called in the turn of the stated number in an attempt to reach someone. Finally, Katie connected contact with Mr. Olive and interviewed him briefly.

But this mysterious, sober, withheld man in the heart of the glitter and the glamor of the Awards season that is stuck in my mind. I wanted to know more about him. How do you become a carpet man? What did he have wanted to be when he grew up? Had he ever attended an award show?

Last year, when the Oscars returned to a classic red carpet, Katie and I again agreed that I a story about Mr. Olive had to pursue, but he was hesitant. But this year, with the encouragement of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, he agreed. It took three weeks for the ceremony.

Mission: Steve, as I called it, had officially started.

I sent a barrage of hectic texts and placed several calls to Brooke Blumberg, a publicist for the academy, in an attempt to capture when the carpet, which was made in a mill in Dalton, would arrive at the warehouse of the company in La Mirada, a city in Los Angeles County.

My goal was to be there when the approximately 30 roles, each weighing 630 pounds, were unloaded on the case of carpet professional, from a truck that had been driven around 35 hours, from Dalton. I thought the scene would be related to the arrival of the Christmas tree of the Rockefeller Center in New York City.

Despite my persistent overtures, Mrs. Blumberg told me that I had missed my chance. The truck had arrived in the warehouse the afternoon before I planned to fly to Los Angeles.

“Oh damn!” I texted her. “Hopefully we can get the installation!” (The week before the ceremony, the 50,000 square feet carpet is rolled into place by a crew of 20-smells of employees on Hollywood Boulevard.)

My next priority was meeting Mr. Olive at his office. But he had the flu, so I was told that the interview might have to happen during a video call. Yet Katie and I thought I had to go to California to catch the scene. And I wanted to meet his colleagues, as well as talking to the person who is the red carpet for the Oscars of Mr. Olive orders every year.

When I finally made the decision to get on a plane, there was a chance that I might not have had a chance to personally with Mr. Neither Olive nor to see the red carpet. But I bought a chair on a Wednesday afternoon flight and hoped for the best.

On my first day in La Mirada I explored the Tapijtpro warehouse event, a white structure of 36,000 square meters under palm trees. Then, on Thursday evening, I interviewed Joe Lewis, a producer for the Oscars who for the past 16 years the red carpet of the Awards Show of Mr. Olive has ordered.

On Friday morning, Face Mask on as a precautionary measure, I visited Mr. OLIVE – Now energetic, his fight with the flu apparently a distant memory – at his office in the warehouse.

I had an idea of him in my head for two years and I was curious if it matched the man. On 6-foot-2, bald and completely dressed in black, he was somehow exactly as I had thought. He was, I learned, a former bodyguard for Mötley Crüe.

He had entered the red carpet company in 1992, with his brother -in -law, which installed tents throughout the country. I met Mr.’s 26-year-old son. Olive, Nick, and his colleagues, who all told me the same thing: this is a man who does not want or needs the spotlight; He is just happy that he makes other people happy.

“I am not good at this,” said Mr Olive, trying awkward to follow the instructions of our photographer, Jennelle Fong, on what his very first photo shoot must have been, while he was on the red carpet of Oscars.

A little media shy, it took him some time to open. And he never really wanted to discuss himself or his days as a bodyguard, for some of the most popular bands from the 80s. “I am not interesting,” he told me.

But I noticed that he felt more at ease when the conversation turned to his lifeline: carpets. He loved talking about his favorite collaborations over the years – all carefully documented on the Instagram account of the company that he took in 2013 – and sharing photos of his dog, Olive.

“You make me look good, right?” He asked an hour and a half later, while we separated. I promised him to send a copy of the article after it was published.

During the weekend it was a hectic clausing to write my article. I didn’t just want the personality of Mr. Capturing Olive, but also the scope and scale of the modern ‘red carpet’, not only as a platform for fashion, but as a personal brand option for celebrities. I wanted people to understand why what Mr. Olive was doing, did it.

I submitted my article on Monday morning; Mrs Fong photographed the installation of the red carpet on Hollywood Boulevard on Tuesday; And we had the story ready to go for Wednesday afternoon, if the carpet were rolled out.

I didn’t get my Rockefeller Center Christmas tree arrival moment. But I witnessed something even better: a modest man who neither needed neither wanted nor recognition and shared his joy about his decades of passion.

Monster Hunter Wilds launched with a typing error in his configuration file on PC, claiming players to solve it improves FPS and performance

Monster Hunter Wilds players have found a typo in the game configuration file and repairing it can actually improve FPS and textures.

Monster Hunter Wilds had one of the greatest launches of the year and attracted one Biegend 1.3 million simultaneous players on Steam At its peak. Fans were enthusiastic to jump in the next big title of Capcom, and for many the gameplay was everything they had hoped for. But for PC players, the experience has been frustrating to say the least.

From the first day, performance problems have plagued the game. Reports of crashes, stuttering, low frame speeds and strange texture doll-ins flooded social media and steam reviews. Players with high -quality GPUs such as the RTX 4090 were stunned by the inconsistent performance.

As a result, Monster Hunter Wilds is currently on a “mixed” rating on Steam, where thousands of users complain that the game is going badly, even on powerful setups.

A typing error can hurt Monster Hunter Wilds performance on PC

Just when players thought they had seen it all, someone found a completely unexpected problem: A typing error in the configuration file of the game can mess with the performance. This was first shared by a Steam user named Beepboop, who was later placed on the Monster Hunter Subreddit.

According to Beepboop, there is one Bealed in the Config.ini file Located in the game installation folder (SteamApps \ Common \ Monsterhunterwilds). Instead of ‘resolution’, the file contains ‘ResoltTion’. Although this may seem like a small mistake, it reportedly improved the performance for some players.

In the post, Beepboop claimed that after correcting the typing error, their The frame speed jumped from 120 fps to 140 fps (with frame generation switched on). Others tested it and had mixed results:

    • Said a player They saw one 10% FPS -increase at 4K with DLSS quality on one RTX 4090.
    • Another claimed Their fps went from ~ 45 to ~ 60 Without frame generation.
    • One person called it “insane” And reported one 30-40 FPS Boost.
    • But not everyone saw an improvement. Some said it made no difference at all.

We have checked our own config.ini file, and yes, the typo is there. Interesting is that some users believe that the typing out texture streaming may have messed up instead of only FPS. A few players noted that textures were better loaded and the GPU use became more stable after repairing.

It was even said that their memory use was falling, so that they could keep settings with high texture without major pop-in problems. It is still unclear how much impact this typo has, but the community tests it active.

In addition, players also report that changing two extra settings in the Config.ini file helped to significantly improve performance:

    ParallelBuildProcessorCount=16
    RenderWorkerThreadPriorityAboveNormal=Enable

Originally the first value was set to 8and the second was set to false. After adjusting these settings on a Intel Core i9-13900K and RTX 3090They saw one Big jump in FPSwhich they bring closer 60 fps usually with DLSS set to quality.

Capcom has been aware of PC performance issues and recently tackled the problems in a support -train on the official website. However, it has not specifically commented on the configuration typing.

It is unclear whether this typo is something that Capcom will patch or whether it is just a strange coincidence that changing the performance for some players improves. But given the Growing reports of FPS wins and texture improvementsIt may be worth repairing manually for the time being.

So, if you struggle with performance in Monster Hunter WildSTry to check your configuration file and correct “Resoltion” to “Resolution“Can just help.

  • Sad case of the youngest person ever diagnosed with Alzheimer’s: science alert

Sad case of the youngest person ever diagnosed with Alzheimer’s: science alert

In 2023, neurologists in a memory clinic in China diagnosed a 19-year-old with what they thought it was Alzheimer’s diseaseWhich makes him the youngest person ever to get the condition in the world.

The male teenager started to take memory around the age of 17, and the cognitive losses only deteriorated over the years.

The image of the patient’s brains showed shrinkage in the hippocampus, which is involved in the memory, and had his cerebrospinal liquid shifted to common markers of this most common form of dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is often seen as the ailment of an old person, and yet early cases, including patients under the age of 65, good for a maximum of 10 percent of all diagnoses.

Alzheimer’s is today an incredibly common disease in the elderly, but it is relatively rare in young people. (Zeljkosantrac/Getty images)

Almost all patients under the age of 30 can explain their Alzheimer’s by pathological gene mutations, so that they are placed in the Family Alzheimer’s Disease (FAD) category. The younger a person is when they get a diagnosis, the greater the chance that it is the result of a defective gene that they have inherited.

Nevertheless, researchers from Capital Medical University in Beijing could find neither of the usual mutations responsible for the early memory loss, nor any suspicious genes when they performed a genome -wide search.

Before this diagnosis in China, the youngest patient with Alzheimer’s was 21 years old. They wore the PSEN1 gene mutation, so that abnormal proteins accumulate in the brain, causing lumps toxic plaques to be formed, a common characteristic of Alzheimer’s.

Cases like those in China form something of a mystery. None of the 19-year-old family had a history of Alzheimer’s or dementia, making it difficult to categorize as a craze, but the teenager had no other diseases, infections or head trauma that could also explain his sudden cognitive decline.

Two years before he was referred to the memory clinic, the teenage patient began to struggle to concentrate in class. Reading also became difficult and his short -term memory fell. Often he could not remember any events from the day before, and he was always misplaced.

Depressive symptoms and memory loss in older adults linked to telomer reduction
Patients older than 65 are good for the vast majority of AD cases. (Maskot/Getty images)

Eventually the cognitive decline became so bad, the young man could not finish high school, although he could still live independently.

A year after he had been referred to the memory clinic, he showed losses in immediate recall, discount delay after three minutes and after 30 minutes of long -term recall.

The full memorial score of the patient was 82 percent lower than that of peers of his own age, while his immediate memorial score was 87 percent lower.

Long-term follow-up is needed to support the diagnosis of the young man, but his medical team said the moment the patient “changed our understanding of the typical age of the beginning of AD”.

“The patient had a very early advertisement without clear pathogenic mutations,” Neurologist Jianping Jia and colleagues Wrote in their research, “which suggests that his pathogenesis still has to be investigated.”

The Case Study, published in February 2023, only shows that Alzheimer’s follows no route and is much more complex than we thought, coming up via countless roads with different effects.

In a statement to the South China Morning Post, the neurologists describing the patient’s case argued that future studies should concentrate on cases of early starting to further improve our understanding of memory loss.

“Exploring the mysteries of young people with Alzheimer’s disease can become one of the most challenging scientific questions of the future,” they said.

The study was published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

An earlier version of this article was published in February 2023.
