Microsoft is retiring the once popular Skype Communications app, while the company is moving more towards the Microsoft Team platform. The company says that Skype will be closed in May 2025 and encourage users to switch to teams.
“Skype has been an integral part of shaping modern communication and supporting countless meaningful moments, and we are honored to be part of the trip,” wrote Jeff Teeper, President of Collaborative apps and platforms for Microsoft.
“We also understand that change can be a challenge and want you to know that we are here to support you every step of the road. We are enthusiastic about the new opportunities that teams bring and are committed to help you stay connected in new and meaningful ways. “
Microsoft says that it will soon open an option for Skype users to switch to teams for free by using their Skype references. The company says that when you register with teams using your Skype account, your chats and contacts appear automatically.
With Skype’s closure, the platform offers no longer paid Skype functions to new customers. This includes Skype credit and subscriptions that make international and domestic calls possible. Current customers can continue to use their Skype credits and subscriptions until the end of their next extension period.
Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011 for $ 8.5 billion. At the time, Skype had an estimated 180 million users, and by 2016 estimates claimed that 300 million used the service worldwide.
